Tangier to Chefchaouen Day Trip via Tetouan: Private Tour of the Blue City

Two very different medinas in one day: white Tetouan, a UNESCO site, and the blue lanes of Chefchaouen in the Rif mountains. Private, from Tangier.

  • 1 day
  • Tangier
  • Private
  • From J$ 16,992 (€95) per person

Overview

This Tangier to Chefchaouen day trip pairs two of northern Morocco’s most beautiful towns. In the morning you explore Tetouan, a whitewashed medina listed by UNESCO, shaped by Andalusian refugees and still very much lived in. Then the road climbs into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen, the blue city that fills so many travel feeds.

A private vehicle makes this long day much easier. Your English-speaking driver chooses the best time to arrive, waits while you explore and is ready when you are, so you never have to watch the clock or hunt for a taxi. In Chefchaouen you have several hours to wander, photograph and shop before driving back to Tangier in the evening.

Expect about two to two and a half hours of driving each way, plus stops. If you would rather sleep among the blue walls and wake up before the crowds, choose the 3-day tour from Tangier to Fes, which includes a night in Chefchaouen.

Highlights

  • Tetouan's white medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Andalusian-style crafts and the royal palace square in Tetouan
  • Scenic drive into the Rif mountains
  • Several hours in the blue medina of Chefchaouen
  • Outa el Hammam square and the red-walled kasbah
  • Private driver who waits while you explore

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip to Chefchaouen worth it?

Yes, if you only have one day. You get several hours in the blue city in the afternoon. The quietest moments are early morning and evening, so stay overnight if your schedule allows.

Can we skip Tetouan and have more time in Chefchaouen?

Yes. Many guests prefer to drive straight to Chefchaouen and arrive mid-morning. Tell your driver on the day and he will adapt the plan.

Can we end the day in Chefchaouen instead of Tangier?

Yes, if you have a hotel there or are continuing your trip. Just let us know when you book.

Is it safe to drive in the Rif mountains?

The main road between Tetouan and Chefchaouen is paved and well used. Your driver knows it well and drives at a comfortable pace, with stops whenever you want.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
