Picture a 110-meter curtain of water dropping into a red-rock gorge, rainbows in the mist and olive trees all around. That is the payoff of this private Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip, the most spectacular natural sight within easy reach of Marrakech. The drive takes about two and a half to three hours through farmland and the foothills of the Middle Atlas.
At the top of the falls, a trail winds down past mills and café terraces to the pool at the bottom. Along the way you will likely meet Barbary macaques, the only monkeys native to North Africa, swinging through the trees. Down at the base, small flat-bottomed boats take you close to the spray for a few dirhams.
It is a fun, active day that suits families, couples and anyone who likes to walk a little. If you grew up near Dunn’s River or the Caribbean rainforests, this is Morocco’s answer: drier, higher and just as photogenic.
