Overview

Rabat is the city many visitors skip, and the one many later wish they had seen. This Casablanca to Rabat day trip takes you about an hour up the coast to Morocco’s capital, a UNESCO-listed city that feels clean, green and unhurried. Here you can explore a real medina without the pressure of busy souks, walk the blue and white lanes of the Kasbah of the Udayas and stand beside the royal mausoleum guarded by horsemen in uniform.

The day is private, so your driver waits while you explore and adapts the order of the stops to the weather and to your energy. History fans love the Chellah, where Roman ruins and a medieval necropolis share a garden full of storks. Photographers love the view over the river Bou Regreg from the kasbah walls.

It is an excellent choice for a free day before or after a longer itinerary. If you want Rabat as part of a bigger trip, it is already built into our 4-day imperial cities tour from Casablanca.

Highlights

  • Kasbah of the Udayas and its Andalusian garden
  • Ocean and river views from the kasbah walls
  • Hassan Tower, the unfinished 12th-century minaret
  • Mohammed V Mausoleum and its royal guards
  • Chellah: Roman ruins, a medieval necropolis and nesting storks
  • A relaxed stroll through Rabat's medina

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Casablanca – Rabat – Casablanca

Morning: Pickup at your Casablanca hotel and a drive of roughly an hour along the coast to Rabat. Start at the Kasbah of the Udayas, a fortified quarter above the mouth of the river. Walk its whitewashed and blue lanes, look over the Atlantic from the old ramparts and rest in the Andalusian garden.

Late morning: Visit the Hassan Tower, the minaret of a huge mosque that was never finished, and the Mohammed V Mausoleum next to it, where the king's father and grandfather are buried.

Midday: Free time for lunch in the medina or by the river.

Afternoon: Explore the Chellah, a walled site where Roman streets and the tombs of a medieval dynasty sit among fig trees and stork nests. Finish with a short walk through the medina and its covered market streets, then return to Casablanca by the late afternoon.

What our travelers say

Highly recommended!

We had an amazing 4-day overland trip from Fes to Marrakech with Morocco Excursions, and I can’t recommend this company highly enough — especially our guide and driver, Hassan. Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

How far is Rabat from Casablanca?

About 90 kilometers, which usually takes around an hour by road, depending on traffic leaving Casablanca. That leaves you a full day in Rabat.

Can we go inside the Mohammed V Mausoleum?

Yes, visitors can enter the mausoleum free of charge and look down on the royal tombs from a gallery. Dress modestly and keep your voice low, as it is a place of respect.

Is Rabat worth it if we are also visiting Fes and Marrakech?

Yes. Rabat is quieter and more modern in feel, with very little hassle in the medina. It shows a side of Morocco the busier cities do not, and the Chellah has no equivalent elsewhere.

Can we end the day somewhere other than Casablanca?

Yes. Tell us when you book and we can drop you at Rabat train station or a hotel in Rabat instead. The price stays the same.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
