Palm groves and earthen kasbahs along the Draa Valley near Zagora on a 5-day desert tour from Marrakech Small group

5 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech: Merzouga, Zagora and the Rose Valley

The unhurried Sahara loop: shorter driving days, the Rose Valley, a desert camp in Merzouga and a night in Zagora in the Draa Valley. Shared minibus, €270 per person.

  • 5 days
  • Marrakech
  • Small group
  • From J$ 48,293 (€270) per person

Overview

Our 5 day desert tour from Marrakech is built for travelers who hate spending ten hours in a seat. Instead of racing to the dunes, it splits the journey into shorter legs and adds places the faster tours skip: the oasis of Skoura, the Rose Valley around Kelaat M’Gouna and a night in Zagora, in the heart of the Draa Valley.

You still get the highlights everyone comes for. There is Aït Benhaddou on the first day, the Dades and Todra gorges, and a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes with a night in a Berber camp near Merzouga. On the way back you loop south through Rissani, Alnif and N’Kob to Zagora, then follow the palm groves of the Draa to Agdz and over the High Atlas to Marrakech.

The tour runs in a shared air-conditioned minibus with a maximum of 17 travelers, departs daily and costs a fixed €270 per person. If you only have three days, the 3 day desert tour from Marrakech covers the core route; if you want this rhythm with your own car and driver, look at our private tours.

  • Shorter driving days than the 3- and 4-day tours

  • A night in Zagora and the palm groves of the Draa Valley

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Aït Benhaddou – Ouarzazate

Morning pickup in Marrakech and a scenic climb into the High Atlas, with stops at viewpoints and Berber villages before the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. On the southern side, a side road leads to Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar you may recognize from Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Walk its lanes up to the hilltop granary, then continue to Ouarzazate, where you check in by mid-afternoon. With time on your hands, you can visit the Taourirt kasbah or a film studio (entrance not included) or simply relax before dinner. It is the gentlest first day of all our desert tours.

Overnight: Hotel in Ouarzazate Meals: Dinner

  2. Day 2 Ouarzazate – Skoura – Rose Valley – Dades

After breakfast, drive east to Skoura, an oasis of palms and old earthen kasbahs, with a photo stop at one of the best-preserved. Continue to Kelaat M'Gouna and the Rose Valley, where Damask roses are grown for rosewater and oils; in May the town celebrates the harvest with a festival. Take a short walk among the fields and villages, then drive on to the Dades Valley. In the afternoon the road climbs past the rock formations known as Monkey Fingers to the famous hairpin bends of the upper gorge. Time to wander before dinner at your hotel.

Overnight: Hotel in the Dades Gorge Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  3. Day 3 Dades – Todra Gorge – Merzouga, camel trek and desert camp

Breakfast and an easy drive to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where you walk between rock walls that soar up to 300 m above a crystal-clear stream. Continue through Tinejdad and Erfoud, where the landscape flattens into hamada desert, to Merzouga. In the late afternoon, swap the minibus for a camel and ride about an hour into the sea of dunes of Erg Chebbi. Climb a crest to watch the sand turn from gold to red at sunset, then walk down to the Berber camp for dinner, drums by the fire and a night under the stars.

Overnight: Desert camp in Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  4. Day 4 Merzouga – Rissani – Alnif – N'Kob – Zagora

Rise for sunrise, ride back to Merzouga and have breakfast. Head first to Rissani, the historic capital of the Tafilalet and a former caravan hub, then west through stony plains to Alnif, an area known for trilobite and other fossils sold by local workshops. Next is N'Kob, a village of sand-colored kasbahs at the foot of the Jebel Saghro range. In the afternoon you reach Zagora, in the Draa Valley, where a famous sign once pointed to Timbuktu, 52 days away by camel. Check in at your hotel, have a swim if the season allows and enjoy dinner.

Overnight: Hotel in Zagora Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  5. Day 5 Zagora – Draa Valley – Agdz – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After breakfast, follow the Draa Valley north. The river is lined with date palms, earthen villages and kasbahs, and there are views over the oasis from several roadside stops. Pass Agdz and the Tizi n'Tinififft pass to Ouarzazate, where there is time for lunch (not included). The final stretch climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka again, so you see the High Atlas in a different light, before descending through the mountain valleys to Marrakech. Expect to arrive in the late afternoon or early evening, with drop-off at or near your riad or hotel.

Overnight: — (tour ends in Marrakech) Meals: Breakfast

Why choose the 5 day desert tour from Marrakech?

The extra time goes into shorter road days, not just more stops. Most days have 4 to 6 hours of driving, compared with up to 10 on the 3-day loop, which makes this tour a good fit for older travelers, photographers and anyone who wants to enjoy the scenery rather than watch it through a window.

Pickup: around 7:30 a.m. in Marrakech; in the medina we may meet you at the nearest accessible square. Return to Marrakech on day 5 in the late afternoon or early evening.

What to bring: a day bag for the camp night, layers for cold desert mornings from October to April, a hat, sunscreen, a scarf against sand and wind, and cash in dirhams for lunches, entrance fees and tips. Swimwear is handy in Zagora and Ouarzazate from April to October.

What our travelers say

Highly recommended!

We had an amazing 4-day overland trip from Fes to Marrakech with Morocco Excursions, and I can’t recommend this company highly enough — especially our guide and driver, Hassan. From the moment he picked us up, we felt completely safe and taken care of. Hassan is a fantastic driver — something we appreciated even more after meeting other t…

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

How many people are on the shared minibus?

A maximum of 17 travelers. Groups are often smaller, and everyone shares the same itinerary, meals and camp.

What does the fixed price include?

€270 per person (about US$303 as of October 2026) covers transport, 4 nights with breakfast and dinner, and the camel trek. It does not change with group size.

How is this different from the 4-day desert tour?

The 4-day tour spends a second night in Merzouga. The 5-day tour spreads the drive over more days and adds Skoura, the Rose Valley, Alnif and a night in Zagora.

Is there a single supplement?

Yes, on request. Without it, solo travelers share a twin room with another traveler of the same gender when possible.

When is the Rose Valley at its best?

Roses bloom from late April to mid-May, when Kelaat M'Gouna holds its rose festival. The valley is green and pretty in spring and autumn too.
